Teri Henley

Senior Instructor, College of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Alabama


Teri Henley has more than 25 years experience in the academic and nonprofit communications field.

Before joining the University of Alabama faculty in 2007, she spent 15 years at Loyola University New Orleans where she was Associate Professor and Chair of the Communications Department and Director of the Shawn M. Donnelley Center for Nonprofit Communications. Her work through the Center gave her the opportunity to supervise more than 300 projects for nonprofit clients. She is author of 21 articles and 3 book chapters in the field of nonprofit communications, which is her research and teaching passion.

Henley continues her active service with the American Advertising Federation. Current and previous involvement includes serving as student chapter faculty adviser, local club president, district board member and Chair of the National Academic Committee of the AAF where she continues to serve as a member. In 2005 and 2006 she served on the National Board of Directors of the AAF. One of her proudest accomplishments is working as faculty adviser for 21 AAF National Student Advertising Competition teams, leading them to district awards 14 times, to the national finals 7 times and a national first place finish in 1995. Most recently , in 2009 she worked with the UA team that took second place honors. She also served as faculty adviser for advertising projects and campaigns winning 30 Student Addy Awards from the local AAF chapter and the 7th District. She is recipient of the Donald G. Hileman Outstanding Advertising Educator Award from the Seventh District of the AAF.

In addition to the AAF involvement, she led student groups to a national first place award in the Collegiate Competition in Promotional Products and Target Marketing and a National Silver Award from the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. Personally she has collected 11 design awards during her career.

After earning her M.B.A. from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1986 she taught there for five years in the Marketing Department. Prior to that she was Executive Director of a nonprofit organization for four years. She earned her B.A. in Speech Communications and Public Relations from Auburn University.

In her sparetime she designs jewelry, travels abroad with her husband Hank and enjoys the always entertaining antics of Scram, a cat they rescued and adopted after Hurricane Katrina.
