Partnership Update

Call to Action

Members of the Higher Education Partnership and their friends are asked to contact Lt. Gov. Don Siegelman and the Senate - 334/242-7800 - in support of an additional $10 million for universities in the education budget. As of March 4, the Finance and Taxation Committee approved a budget for universities that would include a $38 million increase over last year's appropriation. While this amount is appreciated, it is still $21 million short of our "8 in 98" goal. Employees' compensation, operation and maintenance improvements, and other university needs are dependent upon increasing this appropriation. Please contact Lt. Governor Don Siegelman and the members of the Alabama Senate as soon as possible and express your desire for at least an additional $10 million.
During the Higher Education Day Rally held on March 5, at the State House in Montgomery, members of the Higher Education Partnership reinforced the idea that Alabama needs additional university funding. According to Research Associates of Washington, D.C., Alabama ranks 43rd in per student FTE appropriations. Plus, the Legislative Fiscal Office reports that Alabama faculty salaries rank 40th in the nation. It is obvious that Alabama needs to improve its university funding.
Take the time to make a call, send a fax, or write your senator. Let them know how important it is that they support the additional $10 million in university funding.
