Candidate Forum Provides
Media Coverage for University Issues

Lt. Governor Don Siegelman addresses crowd at the Higher Education Partnership's Candidate Forum. Lt. Gov. Siegelman was successful in his bid for Governor of Alabama.

In early October of 1998, the Higher Education Partnership hosted its first Candidate Forum. The forum allowed university supporters from across the state to hear presentations from the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor.
Well attended by a vocal and inquisitive crowd, the forum was a success. It generated excitement that carried over into the election. Further, it provided media exposure for university issues.
The forum was broadcast on evening news programs and later on cable systems covering at least one quarter of the state.
Master of Ceremonies for the forum was 1998 Partnership Chair, Mr. Tom Walker, Assistant to the President at the University of Montevallo. Also speaking to the crowd was the chair of the Partnership Advisory Council, Dr. Robert McChesney. Dr. McChesney is the President of the University of Montevallo. Both Mr. Walker and Dr. McChesney challenged the individuals in attendance to go to the polls and vote. Attendees were reminded that the events of the past four years have taught higher education’s constituents that they must personally “take a stand!”
The forum served as a valuable tool for university supporters as they prepared to go to the polls.
