STARS
Off To Great Start for 1998-99
|
The Higher Education Partnerships
student advocacy organization, STARS, is off to a great start. STARS is
short for Student Teams Advocating Realistic Solutions.
For the second consecutive year, STARS leadership
groups from around the state gathered in Montgomery to initiate their 1998-99
program. Student leaders from the four-year campuses shared their goals
for student participation. Voter registration and election year rallies
were identified as important activities for each campus STARS group.
A new idea was proposed that challenged each campus to develop a committed
voter list.
After a review of the issues and an analysis
of the needs for action, the following conclusions were reached:
A. STARS State Committee members are encouraged
to:
Be alert to the issues of university support
in local elections for the Alabama House and Senate.
Keep fellow students aware of what the statewide
higher education issues are. |
Make sure all students are asked and encouraged
to vote.
Hold voter registration drives.
Provide insight on how to vote absentee.
Involve student organizations on the campus
in rallies, drives, etc.
B. STARS Student Activity Calendar
*September 1 Notify the Partnership of the name of the campus
coordinator for STARS.
*September 20 -STARS campus workers meeting at 2:00 p.m. at the Partnership
office in Montgomery.
*September 28 - October 1 Voter Registration Week
a. Hold voter registration drives between now and October 1.
b. Collect a committed voter list showing the number of currently registered
voters who are committed to voting and willing to make higher education
issues a priority when they vote.
*October 1 Have a large contingent of students attend the
Partnership's Candidate Forum in Montgomery.
