Membership Task Force Completes Workshops
With the goal of developing campus clubs/chapters
of the Higher Education Partnership, a Membership Task Force of faculty,
staff, students, etc. has been formed. The task force completed two successful
workshops. These gatherings provided insight and direction to campus contacts
as they prepared to initiate their campus organization.
Troy State University ...
A Success Story
Among the most important aspects of the
meetings has been the sharing of success stories between university contacts.
For example, the story of the Troy State University club/chapter drive is
encouraging.
Mrs. Debbie Fortune and Dr. Jim Vickery have been co-chairs of the Troy
State University effort to recruit members for the Partnership. As a result,
they have also led the effort to start a Partnership club/chapter on their
campus.
Fortune and Vickery have successfully organized
presentations to both the faculty and the staff. They have worked closely
with students and encouraged the leaders of the Student Government Association
to take an active role.
In addition to organizing group presentations,
they have also personally visited with many campus leaders.
The club/chapter concept at Troy State University
is being facilitated by involving key campus leaders from the faculty, staff
and students.
Further, their club/chapter activity includes a campus version of the Partnership
Update. The TSU Partnership Update allows them to enhance the advocacy activity
on both the state and local level.
1998-99 advocacy participation has also been
promised at Troy. Fortune and Vickery, along with student leaders, such
as 1998 SGA President Erin Johnson, have vowed to hold voter registration
drives, recruit signatures on petitions, host local advocacy events and
attend statewide rallies.
The Partnership club/chapter at TSU will actively
support the advocacy programs for all of Alabamas universities. They
will not only continue their past activities but do not be surprised to
see them formally holding local Partnership club/chapter meetings. The TSU
example provides a good illustration of what can be done to strengthen Partnership
participation on the campus. |
