Petition Drive A Success
|
Thanks to all of the hard work from leaders across the
state, the petition drive asking Lt. Governor Don Siegelman to support higher
education was a success. On April 9, the Higher Education Partnership announced
that over 3,000 signatures were generated during this petition drive. The
petitions, which called for additional university funding, were signed by
faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Alabamas universities
and were then delivered to the Alabama Senate and to Lieutenant Governor
Don Siegelman.
The petition drive, which was initiated by the Partnership, followed the
successful voter registration drives and the Higher Education Rally. By
signing the petition, supporters of improved university funding expressed
their concern for the loss of faculty and staff, the frequent tuition increases,
etc., that have resulted from three consecutive years of reduced funding.
University supporters deserve to be congratulated for deciding to do
something about inadequate funding. Through the Partnership, they
have increased their awareness of the issues, and learned to be more effective
advocates.
Gordon Stone, Executive Director of the Higher Education Partnership, stated,
We applaud the petition signers on every campus for taking a
stand for the future of the states universities and their students.
The 3,000 signatures were taken seriously because they represented an expanding
group of university supporters who are committed to being active players
in the 1998 elections.
Stone continued, The petition signers are committed to making sure
that all of Alabamas political leaders understand the need for improved
university funding."
