Higher Education Day:
A Great Success

Picture this: hot April temperatures, the music of Jacksonville State University and Alabama State University pep bands, bus loads of students and faculty, speeches from higher education supporters and politicians. Mix this together with the wonderful smell of barbeque and you have the recipe for a successful Higher Education Day.
April 8, 1999 was the date for this event. Supporters of higher education came to the State House in Montgomery from universities across Alabama in an effort to make sure their voices were heard by the legislature. They expressed positive comments about the proposals in the education budget regarding higher education. In addition, the university supporters reminded the political leaders that faculty salaries are still below the regional average and that per-student funding is among the lowest in the southeast.

Georgia’s Lt. Governor Mark Taylor gave an informative speech on how the lottery has helped students in Georgia. Governor Siegelman also spoke of his support of higher education. He stated that universities would not have to be concerned about funding cuts, like the previous four-years, during his administration.
Other speakers were: Dr. William Harris, president of Alabama State University and chair of the Council of Presidents; April McKenzie, statewide STARS coordinator and student at the University of Alabama; Senator Charles Steele from Tuscaloosa; Mr. Gordon Stone, executive director of the Higher Education Partnership; and Dr. Tennant McWilliams, chair of the Higher Education Partnership Board of Directors.
Thanks to everyone who made the day a success!
