Courage of Conviction

The Courage of Conviction Award was created because of the desire and need to recognize outstanding leaders………not just those who excel in their professional work, but those who step out on faith, take a risk to support an idea or a principle………those with the vision and heart to lay the groundwork for the future.

The Courage of Conviction Award is designed to recognize those in the business and political worlds who put their convictions to work to ensure that Alabama rises above its past, strengthens the link between higher education and the business community, improves its effectiveness and advocacy with the legislature and positions Alabama for a stronger future in partnership with Higher Education for continued economic development and quality of living for its citizens.

One of America’s greatest statesmen, Thomas Jefferson, realized the value of education and courage just as today’s recipient does. Upon his founding of the University of Virginia, the nation’s first public university, Jefferson wrote to a benefactor: “I recommend to your patronage our Central College. I look to it as a germ from which a great tree might spread itself.” Fueled by his belief and determination, that tree did spread, and formed the roots from which all of public higher education would grow. In the same letter, Jefferson wrote: “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” It is for his vision and courage that we chose to display his likeness on this award.

The courage and strength of character displayed by Jefferson are rare in today’s world. The Higher Education Partnership recognizes and appreciates the determination of courageous supporters. As the award itself declares, one man or woman with courage does truly make a majority…The future of higher education AND this state depend on the courage of your convictions.
